PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

We love helping our youngest patients get started on a lifetime of healthy teeth. But we also know that it is important to start a child out gradually and gently so they don’t develop a fear of the dentist. We encourage our patients who are parents to bring their kids in early so we can introduce their children to the very simplest of examinations and throw in a little beginning education at the same time.

We know it takes patience and gentleness to get a child accustomed to letting the dentist examine or treat them and we’re ready to help them get started. We suggest that you bring your child in for the first visit by their first birthday. We can go over the proper care of their teeth with you during that visit.

Teaching Children Good Hygiene

Our hygienist is especially skilled in helping children learn how to take care of their teeth at home. She will instruct the kids on how to brush the right way, and when they are old enough, how to floss. She’ll also tell the kids about the kinds of foods that could send them back to the dentist with cavities and which foods help them prevent cavities.

More Benefits of Early Hygiene Visits

When we see your child every six months for a cleaning and examination, we can catch any problems very early. We have a chance to remind them about the best types of snacks to choose. A little at a time, we can explain to them that the health of their teeth is very important to their overall health and how they can preserve their teeth for their whole lives.

We also have an opportunity to educate the parents and answer their questions. Some parents are concerned when the first baby teeth start coming out. We can instruct a first-time parent on when these teeth might start getting loose and what they should do at that time.

Yet another benefit is detecting very early when a child might need help getting some baby teeth to come out so their permanent teeth can erupt into their correct positions, and if there are any signs that the child will need braces.

When Should Your Child Start Brushing and Flossing?

Monday through Friday Your child should start brushing with a soft child’s toothbrush as soon as their teeth come in. It’s a good idea for a parent to supervise this process until the child reaches eight years of age.

The child should be taught to floss as soon as they have teeth that touch each other. It would probably be easiest to start your child using flossers until they develop the dexterity to manage dental floss.

If your child is especially anxious or is unable to sit still or follow directions, please consult with us. We can help your child maintain a regular schedule of dental care.

We are board certified pediatricians here to help parents in Bedford and nearby communities like Manchester, Litchfield, Merrimack, Amherst, Nashua, Hooksett, Goffstown, Londonderry, and Derry raise their kids with healthy teeth and a healthy attitude about visiting a pediatric dentist.
